Brief History

Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women is the brainchild of the combined efforts of its founding fathers- Dr. K.N.V Sastri, a noted historian, and political thinker, Dr. M.N Mahadevan, a renowned doctor, and Sri. T.S Rajam, Chairman of the TVS Group of Companies. These illustrious citizens of Bangalore established the college in 1972, in response to the persistent demands of the residents of North Bangalore for an exclusive women’s college in their neighbourhood.

Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni, after whom the college is named, is well known in history as the regenerator of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore. Born in 1742 and married to Krishnaraja Wodeyar II (1734-66), she lived in one of the most turbulent times of South Indian history- during the reigns of Haidar Ali and Tippu Sultan. As the Regent Queen of Mysore from 1799 to 1810, she administered the state on behalf of the minor king Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, under the sovereignty of the English. Her extraordinary crisis-management skills, nation-building capabilities and sterling human qualities have inspired the vision and mission of the institution. By catering to the intellectual, physical, emotional and personal needs of our students, the college has inspired students to uphold the motto “Sheelam Parama Bhushanam”- Character is the highest virtue.

The college logo has three sky facing arrows representing a peer group that is competing and motivating each other to fly higher. It indicates a synergy of strengths working together- resources, processes and vision; stakeholders working together- students, faculty and industry. The three colours- Red signifies energy, strength, power and determination; Yellow stands for freshness, happiness, energy and optimism; Blue symbolizes confidence, intelligence, truth, trust and loyalty. In the spirit of this logo, mLAC is on the path of transforming young girls into confident young women who will contribute to the well-being of the society, nation and world at large.

The college made a humble beginning with just 12 students on its rolls and a government school building as its workspace. The college has grown from strength to strength over the past three decades, and it now addresses over 3,500 students. mLAC has consistently focussed on providing academically sound, practically relevant and value-based education for the all-round development of its students. Its superior facilities, dedicated human resources, and its characteristic dynamism in responding to the ever-changing expectations of students and employers worldwide has given mLAC a distinctive place on the map of higher education in Karnataka. It is now among the top destinations for young women, preparing to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The college is also renowned for its discipline and its efficient handling of students who are on the threshold of adulthood.

Flashback

Recognizing the genuine need to further the cause of women’s education, Dr. K.N.V. Sastri (1895-1984), noted scholar, author and professor in the area of Indian History and Politics – envisioned an exclusive women’s degree college in the northern part of Bangalore. The outcome of his vision was the establishment of MAHARANI LAKSHMI AMMANNI COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, with Dr. M.N. Mahadevan as Founder President and Sri T.S. Rajam as Vice President, and Dr. K.N.V. Sastri as Founder–Director-cum-Coordinator. With a strength of just 12 girls, the college affiliated to Bangalore University, started functioning from 1972 in the building of the nearby Government Boys’ School. Smt. M.C. Vedavalli became the first Principal and steered the institution firmly towards the consolidation of the founders’ vision. Subsequently, Dr. T.L. Shantha who held the position of Principal for over three decades provided greater fillip to the growth of the institution. During her tenure, the institution received several accolades, the significant ones being- NAAC Accreditation, the STAR college status, recognition as a College with Potential for Excellence and the Autonomous status awarded by UGC.

In the initial phase the college faced severe constraint of space. The classes were accommodated in three rooms; the Principal’s office, the administration/accounts section, the staff room and the library were all housed together in a single room. The practical experiments of different subjects were often conducted simultaneously in the cramped space. Overcoming these initial hurdles, the college acquired its own land in 1978 with the generous support of the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri. Devaraj Urs. The present location of the college is in a highly academic ambience, with a number of educational institutions in its vicinity- the most prominent of them being the prestigious Indian Institute of Science. In fact, our founder Dr. K. N. V. Sastri often said that the proximity of IISc. would be a source of inspiration to our students to pursue their academic careers in the field of Science, thus, contributing to the needs of our nation. Incidentally, when the college was started, it was called “Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College of Science with Arts”. Some of our students have pursued research in IISc., thus fulfilling the dreams of the founder of the institution.

In the four decades of its existence, the strength of the college has grown phenomenally. Over the years, the college has developed excellent infrastructure making optimum use of the available space, to provide the best facilities for the multidimensional growth of the students.

The leadership of the management, the progressive vision of the Principals, since inception, the team work and commitment of the teaching faculty, the support of the non-teaching staff, the vibrant student community and the accomplishments of the alumni have made the college one of the premier institutions of Bangalore.

The college is considered as a pioneer on many fronts and rightly so. It is gratifying to receive the applause from all quarters: the academia, industry, media and most importantly, parents. Our greatest joy is when we see our students receive the reward. Ultimately, our efforts are about making them winners in their lives. And as winners, our expectations are simple: “Transform their World!”

Relentless pursuit of excellence is a never ending journey. In the process, there is inspiration aplenty for those who wish to make a difference. While excellence itself is a reward, the experience becomes sweeter when those around acknowledge the value we bring to the world outside.

The Future

The future belongs to the differently thinking in relentless pursuit of an aggressive vision. We are truly bullish on the next stage of our growth journey. And why not? We have earned our stripes on our sheer mettle, earned over a span of over 4 decades.

Among the innumerable accolades, the one that we cherish most is autonomy. Autonomy is a reward that reflects the faith in our abilities and the trust reposed in us as an institution that can shape its destiny and that of the thousands of our students.

Being empowered as an autonomous institution, we now have the freedom to pursue our multiple goals and initiatives. These include:

Enhanced interaction with industry: We believe our academic system should be to deliver learning that can solve the world’s problems. This can become possible when we are in step with the industry and academia elsewhere. We will create opportunities for greater interaction of our students and staff with reputed organizations.

Thought leadership: We believe knowledge is the most crucial asset for a learning organization. We wish to leverage and effect significant sharing of diverse perspectives through various forums. Towards this end, several members of faculty present papers and attend academic events in India and abroad.

More internships and placement: Our students will have a better view of the industry through internships. They are able to appreciate the practical aspects in their learning process. Such interactive opportunities will improve their employability.

Customize content: As an autonomous institution, we will have the power of flexibility to fine tune course content and add new content, so that it becomes more relevant to the industry.

Design collaborative research programs: We will work actively with industry across a wide range of domains by making optimal use of our resources.

Additional training for staff: We will invest in constant training of our most important resource: people. They will be regularly updated on skills, pedagogy and organizational behavior.

mLAC is proud to be pursuing a vision and working towards getting there. On the core factors of teaching, global outlook, research and industry interaction, we have set ourselves ambitious targets on measurable outcomes. When we are able to realize this jump, our students are better prepared for challenging opportunities and higher rewards. More importantly, we as an institution, are better prepared to address societal issues and problems that demand intense research. This is the true transformation we are aiming for.

Campus

A student can make the best out of her life at mLAC which offers a good variety of activities to choose from. The environment at mLAC under the guidance of experienced faculty encourages and nurtures enterprise and talent in students.

Interested students may enrol in NCC or NSS, participate in inter-class and inter collegiate competitions, be part of personality development programmes, or simply participate in organizing the annual college fest ‘Tarangini’. The ones edged with leadership qualities may stand for elections to student union posts to be part of the core organizing group.

The college houses a well-equipped auditorium, a canteen that serves cooked food, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, a gym for the fitness-conscious, a student-lounge, a popular hang-out and a great birthplace of brilliant brainwaves over casual conversations, and has a quadrangle that serves as a multi-purpose assembly point.

Campus Life

mLAC is located strategically in the vicinity of national institutes of repute such as Indian Institute of Science, Institute of Wood Science & Technology, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Raman Research Institute and Central Power Research Institute. These institutions of repute provide an excellent academic model for developing various facilities. Being located in the heart of Bangalore city, the institution has used the available area judiciously and optimally. The various departments of the institution are spread over three floors with ICT enabled classrooms and labs. All the labs are adequately provided with ergonomically designed furniture and fixtures, equipment, lighting and ventilation, so as to facilitate students and teachers to work with ease. The quadrangle is a hub of students' activities and the lounge provides an ambiance for students to unwind.

If an institution’s commitment is viewed through the depth of its resource base, we surely will show up in flying colours. Some of the greatest strengths of our institution are transparency, accountability and good management practices. So, with the right academic policies and innovation, we have been able to build an infrastructure that is comparable to the best. We have excellent laboratories in:

  • Biotechnology

  • Botany

  • Business Lab

  • Chemistry

  • Computer Science

  • Language Lab

In fact, several initiatives such as Biotechnology Finishing School, Bio-informatics Facility and Animal House are the results of such a culture of urgency.

Technology

We believe in leveraging the power of the latest technologies to stay ahead. We have deployed a revolutionary mobile-based institution management system, created by a new generation firm, ipomo. The mobile-based system is easy, foolproof and enables us to make quick decisions, because it gives us the right reports without much of human intervention.
