Department of
Sociology
Fostering academic excellence, advanced research, and holistic development to shape the innovators of tomorrow.
Overview
Academic Approach & Scope
Sociology is the scientific study of human social relationships, cultures, and institutions. At mLAC, the Department of Sociology offers a distinctive and enlightening way of seeing and understanding the social world that profoundly shapes both our lives and human history.
Our subject matter is diverse, ranging from the intricacies of the family to the apparatus of the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical societal change. We train students to think critically about human social life, encouraging them to look beyond normal, taken-for-granted views of reality to develop a deeper, more challenging understanding of the world. Through specific analytical perspectives, social theories, and robust research methods, we expand our students' awareness of the human experience.
