History & Academic Scope

The Department of Economics began its academic journey in 1972, establishing a strong foundation in the social sciences. We currently offer two robust undergraduate combinations designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of human society and economic structures:

  • HEP: History, Economics, Political Science
  • HES: History, Economics, Sociology

Department Objectives

  1. Problem Solving: To acquaint students with contemporary economic problems and equip them with the analytical tools to devise appropriate solutions for socio-economic progress.
  2. Active Engagement: To encourage active student participation in the vital task of economic reconstruction and development.

Course Outcomes: B.A. Economics

I Year: Core Economic Principles

  • Semester I (Microeconomics):
    • Acquire foundational knowledge of the principles and theories of Microeconomics.
    • Understand fundamental economic concepts, such as the laws of demand and supply, building a strong base for deeper study.
  • Semester II (Macroeconomics):
    • Apply the basic principles of Macroeconomics to real-world scenarios.
    • Develop analytical reasoning and presentation skills.
    • Gain enlightenment on the ever-changing economic situations both within the country and globally.

II Year: Financial Systems & Public Sector

  • Semester III (Monetary Economics):
    • Understand the evolution and progression of monetary economics from primitive societies to the modern era.
    • Comprehend the critical roles and responsibilities of the banking industry and other financial sectors.
  • Semester IV (Public Economics):
    • Understand the basics of Public Economics and its immense importance to the modern world.
    • Elucidate the roles, functions, and mechanisms of taxation, public expenditure, and public debt.

III Year: National, State, & Global Economies

  • Semester V:
    • Indian Economy: Grasp the "wide picture" of the Indian Economy, acquiring foundational knowledge of its unique structures, challenges, and ongoing problems.
    • Development Economics: Understand domestic and international policies pertaining to economic growth, mastering modern concepts and developmental policies.
  • Semester VI:
    • Karnataka Economy: Understand the specific economic structure of Karnataka, comprehending the leading issues and driving forces in the state's economic development.
    • International Economics: Equip students with the tools to tackle real-world issues in the age of globalization and financial integration. Understand the multi-faceted international trade policies that play crucial roles in the economies of developed, developing, and under-developed nations.
